#006 – Flam – 12th May

7.29am – We’re almost at Flam and the views outside are awesome. Almost vertical walls rise on both sides of the ship. Many still have snow-capped peaks.

Wow! This is what we saw when we opened our curtains this morning.
More blue sky! How lucky are we?

7.41am – Just going for breakfast now prior to our departure from the ship by tender to the pier in Flam. Our first excursion of the day will be a train ride on the Flam Railway up into the mountains to Myrdal. Trip Advisor states that The Flam Railway is one of the ‘most exciting train rides in the world’. It rises up into the mountains at a very steep gradient, much more than trains usually do. Let’s just hope the brakes are in good order this morning!

Helen just shared this fabulous image with me.

8.25am – Fully breakfasted, it’s time to head to the meeting point for disembarkation.

9.33am – We’ve come ashore by tender and are now on the train waiting to depart.

Just waiting patiently
This image speaks for itself!

9.58am – Just paused whilst we wait for a train coming the other way down the mountain. The views are fantastic.

10.36am – Having climbed up into the snow, we’ve arrived at our furthest station – Myrdal. Although it’s cool outside, Helen and I are quite comfortable only in t-shirts (well, not just t-shirts of course!).

It’s so calm here. The silence is awesome.
This lady is still enjoying the after effects of too much alcohol last night.

12.11pm – Back in Flam we’ve come to a Viking restaurant for lunch. It’s called Aegir BryggeriPub. Catchy name, that!

Our lunch venue. Not a Viking in sight though.
The Vikings certainly knew how to design a pub!
Hmm… what to choose?

1.27pm – We had a superb lunch – a Viking platter which comprised: salmon soup, roast reindeer, gravlax, stewed goat meat and a chocolate pudding with lingon berries. The soup was utterly delicious and most unusual: it had tomato, coconut cream and large lumps of salmon! We’ve just been to the Co-op supermarket to buy stamps for our postcards but sadly there were no tins of that soup on sale there!

The Viking platter was superb!
My favourite was the soup, (in the middle of the picture). The other plate in front of Helen was Lamb sausage – how unusual!
An interesting selection of products was available in the Co-op. However, I think the middle one was off!

1.36pm – We now have about two hours to enjoy a relaxing time working on our sun-tans in Flam before our next excursion to the Stegastein Viewpoint. No, seriously, it really is quite a warm day and I can feel the sun beating down on my neck as I write this. Helen is busily writing postcards to send home and I’m enjoying the view over the fjord to our ship.

Just to be clear – ours is the far one!

4.10pm – We’re currently at the Stegastein Viewpoint having driven up a very steep mountain road with numerous very sharp hairpin bends. The view along the fjord is superb. We’ll be travelling along past this point tonight when we depart from Flam.

Amazing views over the fjord.

6.09pm – Back onboard the ship we are just relaxing and thinking about where we might go for dinner tonight.

8.30pm – So, having perused the various options for dinner tonight, we discovered there was a Norwegian Seafood buffet on in The Grill. For somebody like me who loves seafood it was just heaven. The wealth of choice was mind-blowing. Just have a look at the image below:

An amazing selection of seafood was on offer. This was my starter. The snow crab legs were particularly good.
Yum!

9.28pm – After that amazing dinner, and two consecutive early starts, we’ve come back to our cabin to relax and have an early night. Our third and final port of call is tomorrow at Skjolden and requires yet another early start! We’ll be up around 7.15am to get breakfasted and ready for disembarkation again. It’s all go this cruise lark!
